Job Description:

Considered by many to be the top pharmaceutical company in the world, Pfizer has a burgeoning pipeline across multiple therapeutic areas, along with many marketed blockbuster drugs. The Company has recently formed an External Science & Innovation organization, or ES&I. ES&I is a mechanism to connect Pfizer with leading external scientists and Biotech executives that will be run by a high profile R&D team working closely with key internal R&D experts and in partnership with the Pfizer’s Business Development group. The goal is to create and draw upon global innovative external opportunities in both the biotech and academic space to strengthen the Pfizer's R&D pipeline via strategic integration of select opportunities ensuring continued leadership in both small molecules and in biotherapeutics.
Vice President, Head of Global Scouting,
External Science & Innovation
Job Summary:
Reporting into the CSO, External Science & Innovation, and directly overseeing a group of approx. 10, the Head of Global Scouting will lead this function and will be key in increasing Pfizer’s global presence in the academic and spin-off / early biotech communities to create a window into emerging science to enable Pfizer to have early access to rapidly emerging science in academia; to capitalize on the cutting edge science that will lead to future breakthroughs; and to provide infrastructure that enables fast and effective exchange of science, tools, reagents, etc., between Pfizer scientists and academic institutions. The Head of Global Scouting will have responsibility for Pfizer’s Emerging Science Fund and Seed Fund, and also identify supplemental support for research collaborations (funding, non-monetary) outside of Pfizer and work to build creative deal structures to support external innovation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support Pfizer’s many regional networks in the scientific community to capitalize on the cutting edge science that will lead to future breakthroughs. Continue interactions with Pfizer’s Medical Affairs teams to leverage networks across Canada, Europe and Israel, and extend our global reach into novel research opportunities.
Link into key academic institutions via Tech Transfer Offices and Research labs/key scientists (jointly with Pfizer research scientists)
Harness academic & early biotech innovation globally
Strengthen presence and networks in key regions, eg, US, Europe, Israel with academic/medical institutions, Biotech, VCs, Consortia, and pharma
Build long term relationships & facilitate collaborations based on mutual scientific interest
Identify and implement best business structures to secure scientific partnerships, including: Chairman of the Emerging Science Fund, and Global Seed Fund. Conduct bi-monthly peer reviews of external opportunities and manage committee of 10-12 cross functional scientists to make investment decisions to advance and de-risk promising early science. Responsible for a $20million annual budget, ensuring proper budget tracking and expenditures. Close engagement with Pfizer business development and finance colleagues to adhere to appropriate corporate policies and procedures in administering this Fund.

Pre-competitive consortia
Research collaborations (focus on multiple platform applications) & Post-doc programs
Licensing options & ‘Incubate’ early innovations of strategic fit
Leverage Pfizer’s non-monetary assets (e.g., name, libraries, tools, reagents, etc.) to compete effectively for the best projects
Identify supplemental funding for research collaborations from external sources (eg, government, foundations, venture capital partners)
Work with Company R&D and non-R&D functions (e.g., Commercial, Business Unit, Clinical) and Pfizer Business Development to establish, grow and manage a network of relationships and collaborations with academic institutions, and biotechnology companies in the region
Identify external support opportunities (financial, non-financial) for Pfizer research programs or research collaborations (eg, Academia, Biotech) within government agencies, foundations, etc.; assist in identifying and evaluating investment opportunities that could be supported by the Pfizer Emerging Science Fund (often partnering with VCs or other investors) from academic and biotechnology communities
Ensure effective internal Pfizer communication and utilization of external scientific innovation in academia and early biotech
Recruit top talent to Pfizer as needed, and provide supervision and leadership to a high-performing function and supervise staff within group
Accountable for operational excellence, including consistency and transparency of all processes among partner lines with the goal to build consensus support for opportunities and ensure high and consistent quality of documentation and presentation to Senior Management (up to ELT, Board, CEO) for decision making. This includes i) the provision of scientific/clinical expertise and education as necessary to key partner lines within Pfizer (including, but not limited to, Research, Clinical, Commercial, Business Development, Project Management, Legal), ii) tracking of progress/impact of funded research, and iii) regular updates of the group’s progress
Pro-actively contribute in rendering Pfizer as the preferred partner of choice within Academia and Biotech and represent Pfizer to external partners. Maintain a professional environment during the initial contact as well as continued discussions and negotiations. Represent Pfizer at conferences as well as scientific and other business-related meetings as required (including presentations)


PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in the field of Biological, Biotechnology, Biology, Clinical Sciences, or a related discipline
A minimum of 10-15 years of postdoctoral experience in the field with at least 5 yrs experience within Biotech/Pharmaceutical Industry
Prior experience successfully managing a large team of scientists across multiple locations, ideally spanning multiple geographies, timezones, cultures and traditions.
Preferred Prior Experience:
Experienced in leading a (Bio) Therapeutic Modality-relevant Pharma R&D function and thorough understanding of the entire R&D drug development process; current on market trends and cutting edge developments in the industry
Outstanding network within regional academic and/or biotech communities and experienced in scientific exchange with academic scientists
